Nickmercs Takes Dead Aim At Flagsticks, Fairway Fashion And Wii Golf

The Mercs host the MFAM Classic, a full-day golf tournament in the fall timed to coincide with the week of TwitchCon that has quickly become a highlight of the annual fan community gathering — the last one being held at TPC Las Vegas.

“We’ve only just started doing it but the feedback and how much fun everyone is having – it’s been the best thing we’ve done yet.”

While his massive barbecues for fans, viewing parties and other events centered around MMA fighting and UFC also rank high on the leaderboard, he says the golf event is simply different.

“It’s a little more formal, you get out there and they’re letting loose and everyone’s having a good time. It’s competitive, you’re drinking with your mates and I’m excited to do another one.”

The venue for the next MFAM Classic has not yet been determined, but his team is currently looking at potential host venues in Nevada, Southern California and the Midwest.

For Kolcheff, he feels there’s a delicate balance at the intersection between gaming and golf, which is why the fit in his drop isn’t too heavy on polo shirts with forward-facing collars and hats.

“The demographic is not 80-year-old grandparents on the golf course, right? It’s for the younger crowd that’s going after it. It would be very strange to drop a really traditional golf collection — even with it being Under Armour. You have to make it speak a little bit to the community.”

He sees many synergies and commonalities between the skills that link games to golf. Success in both games, at their core, boils down to muscle memory and hand-eye coordination. The more you play and practice, the better you get.

“You have to be fast and have quick reflexes, and that’s the same in golf. You have to be fast at times and have a perfect turn on the ball. It has to start from the bottom and end at the top, and you have to be calm,” explained Kolchev. “And calm and collected – you can’t break the concentration.”

As for the current state of Kolcheff’s golf game, sometimes diaper duty takes precedence for a 1-year-old boy. “Bro, find me a wii, there’s got to be one on eBay. This guy followed my instructions, but bought a Wii for $900 using the company card. I’m like “Bro, don’t you think you should text me quick to tell me how much it’s going to be before you swipe?” But he passed it on and a $900 Wii showed up on my doorstep.

Wearing his Nostradamus hat, Kolchev predicts that in the distant future, gaming will be at the forefront of live entertainment. He envisions crowded NBA arenas where instead of flesh-and-blood players, players will be the ones directing goals and taking logo shots.

“On the field there’s going to be a giant 3D game that these guys are playing and it’s going to look pretty real because of the technology. I don’t know how you compete with that.”

The precursors could be TGLa technology-packed prime-time television show set to debut in January of 2025 that combines golf simulation from the tee with real chipping and putting.

Kolchev believes the concept, where teams of tour players hit a 3,000-square-foot display and finish holes in a 22,475-square-foot short-game complex with 189 operators and levers that turn the green to change the slope on each hole, could be successful. Very popular with fans.

“There’s a simplicity that I like. On a superficial level golf is a difficult game, so making it simple for new people anyway is something that appeals to me.
