A Cambria County veterinary practice is taking steps to help alleviate the shortage of large animal veterinary care.

Cambria Veterinary Care in Johnstown recently opened its large animal veterinary clinic, which operates as a transportation facility, providing care for a variety of species found in the rural veterinary shortage area including equine, beef, dairy, small ruminant and swine herds. Llamas, deer and poultry.

The facility is equipped with comprehensive services consisting of preventive medicine, pathological and emergency intervention, reproductive care, diagnostic and imaging tests, and surgical procedures.

Cambria Veterinary Care has been around as a small, exotic animal veterinary clinic for over a decade, started by Dr. Joanna Vena in 2013.

Adding large animal medicine to the practice was a project for her daughter, Dr. Aubrey Fina, who said a shortage of large animal veterinarians played a role in the expansion.

“Knowing that our area has a high demand for food and veterinary care for farm animals encouraged me even more in my decision to return home and serve the people and animals that mean so much to me,” the younger Fina said.

She also plans to help educate people about veterinary medicine careers.

“Educational opportunities will be one of our biggest initiatives. Having a physical location like our transportation facility is an asset to inviting groups like 4-H, Future Farmers of America, local students, and more for tours, hands-on learning experiences, and presentations, as well as opening doors to “Students looking to gain experience in large animal veterinary medicine through job shadowing, internships and externships,” she said.

We hope to collaborate with agricultural leaders, educators, producers, enthusiasts, colleagues, fellow senior animal veterinarians, and the next generation of veterinary professionals.

“We intend to promote agriculture, grow the local economy, improve animal welfare and improve the quality of life for food and farm animals, as well as for humans. Together we are paving the way for a brighter future for large animal veterinary care in Cambria County and beyond,” Fina said.

Cambria Veterinary Care is located at 516 Broad Street, Johnstown. The phone number is 814-288-8821 or the fax is 814-254-4805.
