Sporting Kansas City is set to begin the club’s 2024 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup run this week when the team travels to take on USL League One side Union Omaha at UNO Caniglia Field on Wednesday night. Kickoff is set to kick off at 7pm Cairo time and will be available to stream for free MLSsoccer.com. The match will also be available on radio locally on Sports Radio 810 WHB (English).

1. The Open Cup journey begins

Sporting Kansas City is set to begin the club’s 2024 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup journey this week with a visit to Nebraska to take on Union Omaha at Uno Canelia Field on Wednesday night in the round of 32.

Sporting will welcome a change of pace this week as the club is currently in the midst of a five-game winless run in the MLS regular season, going 0-3-2 since beating Toronto FC 3-1 at BMO Field in March 30. He has a history of performing well in the Open Cup despite his lack of form in MLS, having reached the semi-finals of the tournament while struggling in the league in 2022.

Sporting have won the Open Cup on four occasions in the club’s history (2004, 2012, 2015 and 2017), tied for the most among MLS clubs. The 2024 Open Cup will crown a champion in September after eight rounds of singles play, with the winner receiving the Dewar Challenge Cup as well as $300,000 in prize money and a spot in the 2025 CONCACAF Champions Cup.

Sporting is one of eight league teams participating. The American team is in the Open Cup this year, and qualifies as one of the best qualifiers in the 2023 Fan’s Shield standings that did not qualify for the CONCACAF Champions Cup.

Omaha is one of the most competitive clubs in USL League One, having finished at the top of the regular season standings in 2023 under first-year coach Dom Casciato before falling on penalties to Charlotte Independence in the semifinals of the USL League One playoffs.

With just four games played in 2024, Omaha is off to another strong start. The club is unbeaten 5-0-3 in all competitions to start the year, including a 3-0-1 mark in the regular season and a shootout win after two of three draws. Omaha’s roster features three former MLS players, most notably former Sporting KC player Meshack Jerome alongside PC (Orlando and Vancouver) and Misail Rodriguez (Chicago).
