Family Travel Expected to Increase in Summer 2024

Booking.com Reports indicate that accommodation searches by families for the summer travel season are already seeing an 8 percent increase compared to last year, while searches for flights globally are seeing a 21 percent increase. These figures underscore the interest in travel this summer, as families look to make the most of the warmer months ahead.

Nearly two-thirds of families (62%) rank having a good time as their main motivation for traveling this year, followed by finding time to properly relax (58%) and discover new places (48%).

Family movers are playing to travel to trending places this summer, which include destinations known for their beaches, local cuisine, and opportunities for cultural immersion. Whether it’s the beaches of Durres, Albania, or the areas in Tokyo, Japan, these destinations offer accommodations and travel experiences for every member of the family.

The best international summer destinations for families include:

Booking.com data found that kids living in Europe will be traveling the world this summer, with 42 percent of flight searches by Europeans including at least one child. Children living in Asia and North America occupy the top three places at 33% and 32% respectively.

This year, family travel decisions are being shaped by a range of interests and behaviors that are changing the traditional way of traveling with loved ones.

  • Fifty-five percent of families globally say they are inspired to travel to try foods they see in a show or movie, highlighting the influence of popular media on travel choices.
  • Forty-eight percent of families plan to use AI tools as part of their travel planning in 2024, showing a desire to adopt new practices to simplify their travels.
  • Travel nannies may become a popular trend this summer, with 31 percent of families saying they are likely to budget a travel budget for someone to care for their child or children on the trip. This rate is more than half (50%) in India, Hong Kong and Thailand.
  • Comfort is also a top priority with 74 percent of families worldwide citing air conditioning as the most important amenity when booking accommodation.
