‘I’m done with this sport’: Andrew Moloney retires after controversial loss

PERTH, Australia – Australian boxer Andrew Moloney has announced his retirement from the sport following his controversial loss Sunday to Pedro Guevara, a fight he insists should have gone his way.

Moloney, 33, was in control in the early rounds of their interim junior bantamweight title bout at the RAC Arena in Perth – as part of the Vasiliy Lomachenko-George Kambosos undercard – but the Mexican began to turn the tide from the fifth round onwards, showing his ability to Endurance launches a wave of attacks on Moloney’s body.

Two judges scored it 115-113 in favor of Guevara, while the other judged that Moloney had done enough, scoring it 116-113 for the Australian.

“I’m done with this sport,” Moloney said in the ring immediately after the fight.

“This is the last you’ll see of me. I want to thank the sponsors. I’m retired, I’m out. Love y’all, but sorry, f—ing that.”

“I felt in complete control. I did what I had to do there tonight to get the win. I don’t want to make excuses, but I came into this fight with a torn bicep, so I couldn’t throw the left hook unless I needed to, and I didn’t feel like I was “I needed to throw it because I was in complete control.”

Speaking to ESPN after the fight, Moloney stressed his desire to step away from the sport.

“Honestly, I have to say I’m shocked, but I’ve been here before in this sport. It’s as corrupt as anything else,” Moloney told ESPN.

“I thought I won 10 rounds to two. I should have gone home with that belt. I gave my life to this sport for 20 years. Twice they robbed me of a world title.”

“I’m done with this sport because it’s fucked up and I can’t do anything more than I already do, so I’m out.”

Moments before Moloney announced his retirement, Guevara confirmed that he had “no problem” in rematching the Australian.

Moloney is a former WBA junior bantamweight titlist. He has also represented Australia at two Commonwealth Games, winning gold in 2014
