Local group raising funds for Honor Flight of Kern County | Lifestyle

The group, which is focused on raising money to allow Tehachapi area residents to participate in Honor Flights, is continuing its efforts. He will be holding an event at Triassic Vineyards at 3pm on Friday, June 14.

Honor Flight Kern County is a non-profit organization that organizes private trips to Washington, D.C. for veterans. Tehachapi resident Isadore Asher was part of the first group of World War II veterans selected for the inaugural Kern County Honor Flight in May 2012. Since then, many other area residents have received the honor.

The 50th Honor Flight is planned for October, and Tehachapi resident Steve Miles is heading up a renewed fundraising effort.

In addition to his monthly fundraising breakfasts on the last Saturday of each month, Miles has successfully convinced local businesses, individuals and even government agencies to donate gift certificates to be used for fundraising – and cash.

At breakfast on April 27, representatives of the Golden Hills Community Services District were on hand to present a check for $3,000. At the April 18 CSD board meeting, Miles asked for $1,500 and directors responded by donating $3,000. The donation is intended to allow a Golden Hills resident to participate in a future Honor Flight.

In February, Miles asked the Tehachapi City Council for $1,500, and the council responded with a donation of $13,500.

A Facebook group, “Honor Flight Kern County, Tehachapi Fundrasing Division,” is promoting local efforts. In addition to fundraising efforts with local Realtors, the group may begin organizing “drive-thru” birthday celebrations for local veterans.

In addition to cash donations from the city and Golden Hills CSD, Miles recently announced a $10,000 donation from BHE Renewables and hundreds of dollars in cash and gift certificates from other area businesses.

Tehachapi’s Honor Flight breakfasts on the last Saturday of each month are open to all. It’s free for veterans, guests pay $5. This event is being held at the Christian Life Assembly, 920 W. Valley Blvd., Tehachapi. For more information contact Rick Zanotto, 661-331-7560.
