Dr. Williams Named 2023-24 CIAA Sports Information Director of the Year

RICHMOND, VIRGINIA— Bowie State’s Dr. Julissa Williams was named the 2023-2024 John Holley Sports Information Director of the Year by the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) on Tuesday during the CIAA Spring Administrators Awards Celebration. This is the third time Dr. Williams has received this honor and the first at Bowie State. Her predecessor, Greg Goings, won the award in 2008-2009.

The SID of the Year award is named after veteran sports PR and information practitioner John Holley. Holley, a native of Baltimore, Maryland, has managed public information, publications and sports information programs at Albany (Ga.) State College for 14 years. In addition, he held public relations positions at Morgan State University, Mansfield University (Pennsylvania), and Lincoln University (Missouri). Holly also worked as the Sports Information Director at Norfolk State University and Morehead State University (Kentucky).

“I am extremely grateful and humbled to receive this prestigious honor,” said Dr. Williams. “It would not have been possible for me to receive this award without my student interns, also known as the BSU Athletic Creative Team, as well as the relationships built between Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreation Clyde Doughty Jr., our training staff, administration, and most importantly Our BSU Student-Athletes I sincerely share this award with 12 other sports communication professionals within the CIAA and the team of creative students at BSU.

A native of Charles City, Virginia, Dr. Williams is coming off her first year as Vice President of the CIAA Northern Section after previously serving as President of the Sports Information Directors Association (SIDA) CIAA. In addition to her leadership of the Association and Board of Directors, Dr. Williams did an outstanding job for the 2023-24 term for Bowie State Athletics and has done so since her arrival in 2021. Now in her third year at BSU, Dr. Williams continually promotes all 13 varsity athletic teams on a frequent basis , including preview stories, game recaps, statistical game notes for required sports teams, all-conference graphics, game day and in-game graphics, and individual accolades that are some of the best in the CIAA. The department’s social media presence was non-existent except for Twitter (X) until Dr. Williams arrived. Now, Bowie State Athletics has multiple platforms to promote all thirteen sports teams offered and each sports team receives appropriate promotions and support. Instagram has over 3,000 followers (it didn’t exist before she came), Twitter (X) has nearly 9,000 followers (before she took over it had 5,497 followers). She had 508 likes and 531 followers on Facebook when she arrived, and now has more than 1.1k followers and 851 likes. BSU’s athletics broadcasts are some of the best in the conference, and Dr. Williams strives to be the best as her team broadcast all of the 2023-24 home volleyball, softball, soccer, and men’s and women’s basketball contests which included commentators, multi-angle cameras, replays, and a scoreboard In addition to post-match interviews.

Dr. Williams graduated in 2012 summa cum laude from St. Augustine University with a Bachelor of Science in Sports Management. A four-year letterman for the Lady Falcons women’s basketball team, Williams served as the starting point guard and contributed to a CIAA Western Division title in 2009-10 as well as three CIAA Team Highest GPA awards for women’s basketball during her tenure. Dr. Williams earned his master’s degree in sports management from Virginia State University in 2014 and his doctorate in sports management from Northcentral University in 2022.

Dr. Williams holds memberships with Women Leaders and College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and the Black College Sports Information Directors Association (BC-SIDA) and recently graduated from the prestigious Dr. Charles Whitcomb NCAA Leadership Institute in 2023.
