Loy Norrix salutes athletes off to play college sports with flag signing tradition

KALAMAZOO, MI – Numerous banners, banners and flags covered the stage of Louis Norrix High School’s auditorium Wednesday afternoon, marking a special celebration for the Knight-athletes.

With friends and family in attendance, 10 student-athletes from Louie Norrix’s Class of 2024 made their college commitments official by not only signing their college letters of intent, but also signing their future teams’ flags in ink — something Athletic Director Andrew Laboy began three years ago.

After being signed, these flags will be hung back in the high school’s trophy case to carry out the sports legacy. Every year, new ink is applied.

For Labo, this means the lasting influence of Louie Norrix.

“It’s great for the students who are graduating, but it’s also great for the young athletes to see what’s possible for them,” Laboy said. “It motivates them to say ‘I want to go here and make my mark.’ It also motivates them to put their name out there with others and showcase it in our trophy case.”

Among the 10 signees are three women’s basketball players, two volleyball players, two baseball players, one soccer player, one dual-sport athlete (cross country, track and field) and one cheerleader.

Nine different universities were represented among the athletes, with Wayne State University, Albion College, Kalamazoo College and Hope highlighted along the way.

This year’s class has not only demonstrated resilience, but also academic success, Laboy said.

“It was due to their determination and perseverance,” he added. “And the academic success that K-College and Albion has shown and the places they go. No matter what their sport is, they have to get their books so they can go. That’s very impressive from this group.”
