Trump and Biden Agree to Debates in June and September. Here’s What to Know

President Biden and former President Donald J. Trump have agreed to debate at least twice before the election, though their plans upend the traditional structure of presidential debates.

The first debate is scheduled to take place much earlier than usual, and so far none of them will include the committee that has hosted presidential debates since 1988.

Here’s what you should know:

The two candidates agreed on June 27 as the date for the first debate, which will be hosted by CNN in its studios in Atlanta.

By then, Biden will have returned from G7 summit meetings with other heads of state in Italy, and Trump’s money trial in New York should have concluded.

Both challengers have also committed to the Sept. 10 debate hosted by ABC News.

The Biden team is aiming to conclude the debates around the beginning of September when early voting begins, a departure from the long-standing debate calendar in which the major party candidates faced off against each other in late September and October.

His campaign noted that holding the debates early would give voters the opportunity to evaluate the candidates before casting early ballots, and allow the candidates to focus on campaigning in the final weeks of the race.

The Commission on Presidential Debates has organized debates for nearly 40 years, but Mr. Trump and Mr. Biden have expressed grievances about the process and organization. They did not agree to include the committee in any of the discussions, which scheduled its deliberations on September 16, October 1, and October 9.

The first debate they agreed upon, scheduled for June, will take place much earlier than usual, and both men will remain merely the presumptive nominees when they face each other then.

While both Mr. Biden and Mr. Trump They received their party’s nominations In March, Trump is not scheduled to formally accept the Republican nomination until the party holds its convention in July in Milwaukee. Biden will formally accept the Democratic nomination during the party’s August convention in Chicago.

The accelerated debate schedule represents a sharp departure from the modern cycle in American politics, when presidential debates are typically held after Labor Day, following the conventions of the two major parties.

For the most part, how the discussions will be structured is still being worked out.

CNN said that its debate in June will be held without an audience. This meets one of the demands of the Biden team, which wants to avoid an in-person audience that could cheer, boo and derail the conversation.

Mr. Trump, feeding off the reaction of his supporters, indicated that he wanted a crowd, and accused Mr. Biden of being “afraid of crowds.”

The president’s team has insisted that the debate stage be limited to Mr. Biden and Mr. Trump: It wants to exclude Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the independent candidate who polled as a teenager and appears to be drawing support from both presidents. – Party candidates.

Its terms also called for the network hosting the debate to cut off candidates’ microphones when they exhausted their allotted time.

During a presidential debate in 2020, Mr. Biden uttered one of More memorable lines When Mr. Trump repeatedly interrupted him. “Will you shut up, man?” He said.

Neither CNN nor ABC have announced who their moderators will be.

Mr. Trump and Mr. Biden appeared to have met the challenge when they committed to the debates.

But canceling the presidential debate will not be anything new.

In 2020, the second of three debates It had to be cancelled After Mr. Trump declined he and Mr. Biden to participate online, which the debate commission had suggested because of the coronavirus pandemic.

This election cycle, Trump has bypassed the GOP primary debates, at times organizing counterprogrammes of his own through televised town halls.
