Plymouth Pilot Finds Health Through ‘Real Lifestyle Change’

The life of an aviation pilot has its pros and cons.

“It’s a very sedentary lifestyle – sitting and traveling around the country at different hours of the day across different time zones,” said Chris Cape, a Plymouth resident who works as a pilot for a major airline.

Every six months, Kip must undergo a medical examination in order to continue flying.

“When you go to the doctor, there’s a chance they’ll say your heart’s not in the right shape or your weight is too high, or your BMI is too high or something else,” Kipp said.

In 2019, he realized he needed to change his fitness habits in order to pass this health test, so he enlisted the help of Nehemiah Owusu, a personal trainer and nutrition coach at the center. Plymouth Lifetimeto do something about it.

“We started working on his mobility, improving his imbalances, teaching him basic movement patterns to build that foundation and base,” Owusu said.

Together the two developed a workout routine that could fit into his busy lifestyle.

Over the course of 18 months, Kip achieved his goal.

“He ended up losing over 30 pounds, reduced his body fat by 12 percent, and passed all of his annual health checks with flying colours,” Owusu said.

Lifestyle change

Kip lost weight and body fat in 2020, but four years later, he’s maintained the weight he lost.

He does this largely because he follows his Life Time training sessions, and has never strayed from his nutrition plan.

“It’s a real lifestyle change,” Kipp said. “I have an app where I track all the calories I make every day.”

While this method may seem daunting, Owusu says it’s something anyone can do, even if you don’t have the money or time to pay for a trainer and nutrition coach.

“Walking around the neighborhood is free. You know, doing bodyweight exercises at home is free. Finding exercise routines online is free,” Owusu said.

In other words, when there’s a will, there’s a way.

Just ask Chris Cape.

“I was shocked at times,” Kipp said. “I’m in better shape and feel better today at 46 than I did when I was 25.”

Of course, diet is a big part of maintaining weight. One tip is to eat a protein-rich food at every meal, Owusu said. This can include things like lean meat, poultry, fish, eggs, beans and lentils.
