The satellite was the first of two to be launched on Electron on NASA’s PREFIRE mission to detect heat loss over the Arctic and Antarctica.

(Nasdaq: RKLB) (“Rocket Lab” or the “Company”), a global leader in launch services and space systems, today announced the first of two consecutive launches of NASA’s PREFIRE (Polar Radiant Energy in Far-Infrared Experiment) rover, a mission focused on… the climate.

The Ready, Aim, PREFIRE rocket was launched from Rocket Lab Launch Complex 1 in Mahia, New Zealand at 7:41pm New Zealand time on May 25.y, 2024. The first two satellites of the PREFIRE mission were launched into a 525 km circular low Earth orbit. Now that the first satellite has been successfully deployed, the second satellite will be followed by another dedicated Electron launch in a few days. The launch date for the next mission, “PREFIRE and Ice,” will be confirmed early next week.

Rocket Lab’s ability to launch customized missions to precise orbits on demand is critical to PREFIRE’s success. The mission requires two separate satellites to follow similar paths but along different paths to interfere with each other every few hours near the North Pole and Antarctica and capture precise measurements of heat loss. Both PREFIRE satellites are equipped with a device called a thermostat, similar to sensors found in home thermostats, to measure heat loss at far-infrared wavelengths that have not been systematically measured before. This data collected by the PREFIRE mission will help improve climate and ice models and provide better predictions about how sea levels and weather on the planet will change in the future.
