Honoring veterans and the history of Battleship Texas on Houston Happens

Houston (Kia) – Memorial Day is a day set aside to mourn men and women who have fallen in service to the country. It is a day for reflection and remembrance. On this day, we remember the brave men and women who died while serving in the US Army. Their sacrifices ensured the freedoms we enjoy today. On Memorial Day, we honor their memories and pay tribute to their families.

On Today’s Houston Happening, we take a closer look at this inspiring holiday and find other ways to pay respect to the men and women who risk their lives for service or country.

Battleship Texas

The Battleship Texas is part of our history now entrenched in Gulf Copper Shipyard In Galveston. The ship is closed for extensive repairs, but there are plans for a grand reopening late next year. the Texas Battleship Corporation On a mission to preserve and enhance this historic ship, and to create a distinguished museum and visitor attraction that honors the memory of the warship and those who served on it.

The battleship Texas served in both World Wars, earning five battle stars during World War II. Remarkably, in more than three decades of active service, only one crew member was lost to enemy fire.

In 1948, the Battleship Texas was donated to the State of Texas to serve as a museum and memorial. The Battleship Texas is a beloved and honorable symbol of our state.
