Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport (US) Review 2024


Hey partner, it’s the Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport facelift. Now, the Cross Sport is essentially the five-seat coupe version of the massive seven-seat Atlas SUV. Even though we’re talking about a North American-spec SUV, it’s actually described as a mid-size SUV.

The Atlas Cross Sport was first revealed in late 2019, but has been comprehensively updated for 2024 with a new front fascia, new lighting, more technology and a more luxurious interior.

It actually looks cool…

Yes, we like the design too. The Atlas Cross Sport combines chunky arches and a cheeky front fascia with a low, sloping roofline. There’s a newly extended rear spoiler and a more aggressive rear diffuser, as well as all-new wheel designs (from 18 to 21 inches) for the 2024 refresh.

LED lights are standard across the board, and on all but the entry-level model, you get a full-width light bar across the front of the car with an illuminated VW logo. There’s a huge light bar across the back as well, as well as an Atlas-branded chrome bar and another illuminated logo. There’ll be no missing the Atlas Cross Sport make when you pass by at night.

It is worth noting here that – as with other Volkswagen products – the R-Line model brings a slightly sportier design with more body color on the bumpers and redesigned air intakes at the front.

In terms of dimensions, the Atlas Cross Sport is 195.6 inches long, 78.3 inches wide, and 68.1 inches high, making it 5.2 inches shorter than the full-size Atlas.

What engines can I get?

that it engine (single) These days, because VW used the Atlas Cross Sport facelift to nix the VR6 option, meaning you can now only specify the EA888 turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with an eight-speed automatic gearbox. Fortunately, this engine was fitted with a trunk, where VW was able to extract 269 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque; Up 34 hp and 15 lb-ft over the previous generation.

Great question. The entry-level SE model can only tow 2,000 pounds, but every other Atlas Cross Sport now has a towing capacity of 5,000 pounds with a braked trailer, and a trailer hitch installed as standard. All trim levels also get the option of 4Motion all-wheel drive.

Volkswagen itself describes the interior of the Atlas Cross Sport as “clean and functional, with a luxurious feel.”

The Atlas Cross Sport is a highly competent two-row family SUV, but it can get expensive as trim levels increase and it really lacks character. Perhaps that’s because it’s based on VW’s MQB platform, and as such doesn’t even stand out among a crowd of its siblings, let alone a host of rivals.

It’s also now four-cylinder only, and as good as the EA888 engine is usually, here it feels weedy and underpowered. The Atlas Cross Sport is not a fast car. It may be perfectly comfortable in everyday use, but that doesn’t really give you anything to shout about, does it?
