Seniors make 3 state final appearances in 3 different sports

Derek Sorenson and Kayden Swinby played critical roles in the success of football, basketball and golf, making the state final in each sport.

Beltrami, Minnesota – Khasib Beltrami Secondary School It boasts some serious sports programs.

Senior Kayden Swinby has found himself in the state finals for football and basketball and will be in Baker for the golf state tournament this week.

Swinby doesn’t get all the credit for the stages he played on.

“It’s amazing, all the hard work that me and the rest of my teammates put in over the offseason and in the regular season, just all the time we’ve spent together practicing and trying to excel at what we do, it’s amazing,” Swinby said. “It’s amazing to finally see all this hard work pay off.”

The Falcon also won the Minnesota State High School League AAA for academics, arts and athletics.

Next year, he will play basketball at the next level at D2 University of Minnesota Crookston, but Swinby isn’t the only senior to reach three state finals.

Fellow senior Derek Sorenson has been with him every step of the way, playing critical roles in the success each team has seen this year.

“We’ve seen each other grow and grow closer, especially in sports, and to finally see us succeed on the biggest stages in the state is really fun,” Swinby said.

“I remember one basketball game where I threw it off the backboard and he came up from behind and knocked it down hard,” Sorenson said. “So it was great to see him, him throwing me touchdown passes during games, so yeah we have a great connection.”

Another bond they have is the pride they feel in their hometown.

“Our community is one of the best around,” Swinby said. “We have more spectators at away matches than the home team. They come and support us everywhere we go.”

“Our community is amazing,” Sorenson said. “The work they’ve done to either make our complexes or our gyms that much better and just to see them at all our games, just cheering us on, them investing in us, it’s great to see.”

So what motivates these athletes to be the best?

“I always wanted to be the person who sets the standard for others,” Swinby said. “When I was younger, I always wanted to be better than everyone else while growing up at our school, so I just wanted to try and succeed as much as I could to give this next generation at our school someone to especially look up to.”

This week, they look forward to enjoying every last second of their last high school competition at the state golf tournament in Baker.

“This is our fourth time going to golf,” Sorenson said. “This will be the last tournament we will play together, so we will try to have fun, be together and have fun together.”

“It’s my last high school event ever, so you want to go out and you want to win,” Swinby said.

The Falcons didn’t end up winning the football state championship or the basketball state championship, so both seniors say they’re very excited to bring home some hardware with the golf team.
