Alabama Weather History: The Dixie Tornado Outbreak
April 24, 1908 marks a tragic day in Alabama weather history. Several tornadoes touched down east of the Mississippi River. Watch the video for more knowledge. Weather History Revisited More than 100 years ago, the outbreak of Hurricane Dixie occurred. At least 34 tornadoes tore through parts of the Southeast from April 23-26. Some of those tornadoes touched down in Jefferson, Walker, Blount and Marshall counties. The first developed in the city of Dora and headed east until it was raised in DeKalb County. This tornado was rated as an F4. According to the National Weather Service, the tornado’s estimated damage path was at least 100 miles long. The damage path ranged from about 200 yards to a half mile in width. Another storm produced a tornado that struck the city of Albertville in northern Alabama. In addition to destroying several homes, a nine-ton oil tank was moved half a mile. This was a tragic day in weather history with 35 deaths recorded in Alabama alone. Weather history revisited
Over 100 years ago, there was an outbreak of Hurricane Dixie. At least 34 tornadoes tore through parts of the Southeast from April 23-26.
Some of these landed in Jefferson, Walker, Blount, and Marshall counties. The first developed in the city of Dora and headed east until it was raised in DeKalb County. This tornado was rated as an F4.
