Oof! April was a busy month for the Middlesex County Animal Shelter and Friends of Middlesex Pets for Life. The shelter was bursting at the seams, housing 40 dogs and taking in 17 cats.

Since our shelter was not built to accommodate kittens, we were fortunate to have the Gloucester-Matthews Humane Society to help by taking in some of the kittens. However, shelter staff were overworked and overworked the worker’s job of cleaning, feeding and keeping the animals comfortable.

Our wonderful and dedicated volunteer dog walkers worked double shifts to make sure all the dogs were walked every day and the kittens got some love time too.

Our biggest fundraiser on April 20, Low Country Boil, was held at the Deltaville Maritime Museum. We are happy to report that it was an overwhelming success thanks to the generosity of our volunteers and donors.

Megan and Ricky were five star chefs and pleased every palate. Sarah and Colleen put on a wonderful silent auction. Kim and Jeff made bartending look fun – in fact it was fun! Maggie ran a lucrative 50/50 draw and thanks go to the winner, Robin Matthews, who generously donated half of her money to the MPFL.

The amazing band Flat Tones kept the place buzzing and people dancing all night long.

The volunteers prepared some of the most delicious desserts ever. We are so grateful to the volunteers who set up, clean up and generally get it done. Thanks also go to the many merchants, artists and contributors who contributed to its success.

Please check us out on Middlesexpetfriends.wordpress.com and Facebook. Come say hello to the May Deltaville Farmers Market and visit the shelter to meet your new best friend. Donations can also be sent to MPFL, PO Box 145, Saluda, VA 23149 or online. Dog and cat food are also appreciated.

See you at the next farmers markets. Enjoy this “perfect” weather.
